UNDERCOVER OPERATIONS

The undercover agent is your eyes and ears to what is happening in your organization!! Employee theft is a $300 billion a year problem in the United States.

When management has concerns that an individual employee or a group of employees are behaving improperly but can not determine what they are doing, an undercover operative can frequently establish if there is justification for concern or not. Undercover operations are a critical tool used to resolve difficult situations where an insider’s view is needed.

APA provides trained undercover operatives that can assimilate themselves into the workplace to garner information concerning problems in the organization that include

  • Theft
  • Substance Abuse
  • General Intelligence
  • Workplace Violations
  • Fraud

Undercover personnel are available to pose as sales associates, stock clerks, housekeepers, cash office personnel, receivers and other positions. This individual will be a trained, experienced undercover agent who will interact with staff and management.

The Operative will note any observations of theft, employee malfeasance, drug use or sales, theft of time, rules and regulations violations, operational concerns, poor management, sexual abuse, etc. Conversations amongst employees that are significant to the investigation, such as an employee discussing past criminal behavior, are detailed in weekly reports.

Operatives collect important evidence of policy violations by engaging in the purchase of stolen company property, trade secrets, or narcotics. When needed, an undercover investigation will involve assistance from law enforcement. APA will liaison with law enforcement for the client in these situations.

Our operatives are supervised closely by management to insure that the clients’ problems are being addressed and intelligence is gathered. Weekly reports are submitted to the client to keep them informed of the progress and to partner with them in determining the course of action that should be taken.

Utilizing ethical, thorough investigative technique, APA’s undercover operatives can help you get the answers to your questions!

Case Study

Problem: A company employee tells the HR manager that employees are buying and selling crack cocaine in the facility’s parking lot and cafeteria. Other employees are concerned that the work environment is not safe if some employees are under the influence of illicit drugs. Employee morale is low.APA is requested to introduce an undercover operative into the workplace to determine which employees are selling drugs.

Process: APA works with HR and inserts an experienced undercover operative. The Operative gains the trust of some employees and learns who is actively selling crack cocaine on the premises. APA works with local law enforcement and the operative make “buys” under the direction of the police department. Covert video and audio surveillance is conducted on the buys.During the process, the Operative learns about many instances of policy violation amongst employees and numerous problems with members of mid-management.

Result:  APA partners with the client and law enforcement to determine the best time to end the operation. Four employees are arrested and subsequently convicted of Class D felonies. Six employees are terminated for policy violation and two managers are also discharged.Employee focus groups are conducted and management learns that the employees are happy with management’s response. In subsequent months, HR sees that employees are now more eager to bring forth problems.
